這是之前紐約曼哈頓的一個創意競圖 DESIGN OF HIGH LINE 最後入圍四組團隊的提案。

Friends of the High Line is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and reuse of the High Line - a 2.5 mile, elevated railway that runs along the West Side of Manhattan.
這條沿著紐約曼哈頓島西邊、長2.5英里的鐵道在2003年舉辦了一個Master Plan的Idea Competition。來自世界各地36個國家，720組個人以及團隊參加了這次競圖。之前公佈了最後入圍的四組團隊，仔細一看，這四組的來頭都不小，其中包括了：
1.Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Olafur Eliasson, Piet Oudolf, and Buro Happold
2.Zaha Hadid Architects with Balmori Associates, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, and studio MDA
3.Steven Holl Architects with Hargreaves Associates and HNTB
4.TerraGRAM: Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates with D.I.R.T. Studio and Beyer Blinder Belle
These four teams have been selected to create a master plan for the High Line. One will be sected by the end of this summer to begin designing New York's most exciting new public open space. These aren't final plans; they're illustrations of each teams proposed approach. The master plan itself will be developed by the selected team starting this fall, with many opportunities for you and the community to play a role.
目前這條穿越曼哈頓島西側的基地還是屬於CSX的私有財產，高架的舊鐵道兩旁大部分是公寓住宅。許多大城市在發展一段時間之後，往往會有一些空間退化、衰敗，而其中以舊有的鐵路系統以及工業區最為常見，如何在這些舊有的基礎建設之上給予新的空間生命，常常是各大城市要面臨的問題。德國的魯爾工業區、法國的奧賽美術館、Bercy-Village、Parc de la Villette、美國的SOHO區、等等。每一個舊空間都因新生命的注入而得到了重生的機會以及帶動整個城市的活力。當然，並不是在舊空間中一廂情願地希望更新便可以，這其中還需要以更大的都市角度來檢視空間新生命的定位。魯爾區的創意產業；巴黎市區的美術館、市郊的休閒、商業、教育產業；蘇活區的藝術產業，都有其背後產生的條件與整體都市發展的考量。
