The Irish Architecture Awards 2009 were presented on Monday evening, 22 June by Minister for the Environment John Gormley, TD at the Cowshed Theatre in Farmleigh. A total of sixteen awards were presented for a shortlist of 35 projects, including categories such as 「Best Public Building」, 「Best Educational Building」 and 「Best Building in a Landscape」.
Grafton Architects, who won the 「Building of the Year Award」 at the 2008 World Architecture Festival for their Universita Luigi Bocconi in Milan, were honoured at the ceremony with the presentation of the President's Award by RIAI president, Sean O'Laoire.
The newly redeveloped Thomond Park stadium in Limerick, home of Munster rugby, was the unsurprising winner of the Public Choice Award, presented to the architects of the projects, Murray O'Laoire/AFL Architects.
A welcome distraction of light entertainment was provided by the master of ceremonies, Ryan Tubridy, at a time of great challenges for the architectural industry in Ireland.
