Contenders for the Stirling Prize shortlist were revealed at the RIBA National and International Awards at London's Hilton Hotel on Friday night.
Architects Allies & Morrison, Reiach & Hall, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris are among those vying for the award alongside previous Stirling Prize winners David Chipperfield and Grimshaw, who won European awards for, respectively, Am Kupfergraben 10, in Berlin, and the Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena Station.
The final shortlist for the 20,000 英鎊 Stirling Prize will be announced on July 17, with the winner announced on October 11 2008.
Twenty-six award winners including Gumuchdjian, Zaha Hadid and David Chipperfield, John Pawson and the Heatherwick Studio scooped National and European prizes at the Hilton Hotel in London.
Meanwhile, Gianni Botsford Architects claimed the illustrious Lubetkin Prize for a private house development in Cahuita, Costa Rica.
The practice beat competition from Cullum & Nightingale Architects' New British High Commision in Kampala, Uganda, and Coop Himmelb(l)au's Akron Art Museum in Ohio.
Gianni Botsford's Casa Kike comprises two buildings built on 1.2m piles of termite-proof hard wood. Two pavilions are linked by a raised walkway while the structure inside incorporates bookcases for some 17,000 titles.
Sunand Prasad, president of the RIBA, said: 「My congratulations to Gianni Botsford, whose house for his father, shows that sometimes the best architecture can be small in scale but big in architectural ambition. All the shortlisted schemes show how innovative and inventive RIBA members' work can be on an international stage.」
The RIBA Client of the Year 2008 winner went to Coin Street Community Builders for projects including this year's award winning Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre by Haworth Tompkins Architects and the Oxo Tower.
Those shortlisted for the Lubetkin prize were judged by Prasad, Niall McLaughlin, chair of the RIBA Awards Group, Tony Chapman, RIBA head of awards, Denise Bennetts and Glenn Howells.

The new state of the art BBC headquarters building encompasses all aspects of television, radio, and internet, accommodating production facilities, digital studios, technical support, and office space. The design seeks to encourage creative interaction between the 1000 occupants by connecting all the workspaces with a central rising atrium that acts as a place for meeting, working and circulating.
The building is located alongside the abandoned Govan docks on an exposed plot of land dominated by the expanse of the river Clyde and the mountains of the Scottish Highlands. Faced with this open landscape, the building had to find ways to establish its own sense of place and satisfy the demands of the BBC for a contained yet publicly accessible building.
The building is distinct from conventional offices; more industrial, loft-like in feel, it gives equal importance to collective work areas, individual workstations, and public spaces. Accordingly, the central atrium is configured as a tiered sequence of steps, platforms, and terraces. Circulation and communication through the building and between office floors is promoted by this giant staircase, which not only offers informal meeting areas, but encourages movement between spaces, giving powerful visual representation to the public aspect of the building.
The jury panel highlighted the successful characteristics of the winning building:
“Central to the design is the placement of a sequence of large studio spaces in the centre of the building, stepping up in scale towards the back. The negative space above has been utilised as a massive central atrium. The elegant sculptural block is full of activity and holds everything together. By hiding the set of studios beneath it the architects have resolved a major element of the brief into a piece of architecture and created a central space to house the cultural life of the building.
"The question of how to make something that is purely functional into something socially and sculpturally successful has here been addressed with great skill. The architecture has seamlessly resolved technical, production, office-based and social functions within a singularly awe-inspiring volume”. .

The landmark 50 storey tower incorporates a 279 bedroom 4* Hilton Hotel up to level 23 and residential apartments on the remaining floors. The tower steps out above level 23, signifying the separation between hotel and residential accommodation, and the glazed skin on the south fac,ade extends 25m above the top floor, creating a transparent 'blade' that forms an elegant terminus against the sky. The lower levels of the building are well integrated into the urban context and have been equally carefully considered.
The architect describes this important high-rise building as 'a little bit of New York' and it is certainly has the excitement and bravura of the Manhattan tradition.

It is metropolitan open land, and the design responds to its setting, preserving existing woodland and using the fall across the site to hide some of the bulk of the building. In parallel with the design, Hopkins and the LTA are seeking to develop a "green" transport plan to minimise impact on the neighbourhood.
The centre provides numerous tennis courts of differing surfaces. It includes accommodation for 8-16 year olds, staying for three-month courses, specialised gymnasia, a sports injury clinic, a facility for training coaches, and offices. Each function requires a different type of space - the indoor courts need large volumes, the gyms must be well serviced, the offices efficient and the residential areas comfortable and homely. Most importantly, all the elements have to come together in a way that gives the sport a strong, appropriate image.
Three-dimensional grid shell, dome-like roofs form the largest volumes covering six in-door courts for year-round use. The gyms and training areas on one side and the residential areas, carefully articulated with balconies and windows, on the other, give scale and richness to the facade. Alongside, joined by a courtyard, are the offices. Each part has a separate identity within an overall composition.

The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, Orkney, houses a remarkable collection of 20th Century British art. The collection charts the development of modern art in Britain and includes key works by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo among others.
The Centre's founder, Margaret Gardiner (1904 -2005), was a close friend of many of the artists represented in the Pier Gallery Collection and her decision to give a large part of her personal collection to the people of Orkney led to the opening of the Centre in 1979.
Architects Reiach and Hall, designed the building on the shoreline to link together the two existing historic buildings to create a single complex.
Following the completion of a £4.5 million project, The Pier Arts Centre opened its doors to the public on Saturday 7th July 2007.
One Jury member Douglas Read said, "The jury was particularly impressed with the Pier Arts Centre because of the seemingly effortless way in which the new gallery has been settled in beside its neighbours as an integral part of the townscape."
SKM's Chief Operating Officer for Europe & Middle East, Peter MacKellar expressed his delight at the news.
「The RIAS Andrew Doolan Award provides public recognition for top quality design in Scotland,」 Mr MacKellar said.

The Royal Festival Hall, designed by Leslie Martin and Peter Moro, was the centrepiece of the 1951 Festival of Britain. Allies and Morrison has been involved with the refurbishment since being appointed as house architects in 1992 and has been responsible for two successful Heritage Lottery Fund bids. Now, some 50 years later, this iconic building has been transformed by a project that has refocused the original design ideas while making significant changes. The scope of the work has been immense and has left few areas untouched. In the auditorium, the acoustics, audience comfort and production flexibility have been transformed. Foyer spaces have been expanded by clearing out clutter and moving the Southbank Centre offices into a new building. The external terraces have again become vibrant public spaces, recapturing the spirit of 1951.
