OLYMPIC POOL PLANS UNVEILED
London 2012 officials have announced the winning entry in a contest to design the city's first new Olympic venue.
Plans by Zaha Hadid for a 20,000-seat aquatics centre were chosen by a panel co-chaired by eminent architect Lord Rogers.
The new venue, which features a spectacular s-shaped roof to reflect its riverside location, marks the first step in a plan to regenerate a 500-acre site in Stratford, east London.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said: "A London Games in 2012 would be the greatest sporting spectacle the world has ever seen, transforming the Lower Lea Valley and creating a lasting legacy of cutting-edge sporting venues for the capital and the nation.
"Zaha Hadid's exceptional winning design gives a taste of just what we can offer and makes London's bid to host the Games even more compelling."
A spokeswoman for the 2012 bid revealed the cost of the Aquatics Centre to be ?2.5million, with Sport England contributing ?0million and the rest being made up by government funding guarantees.
She revealed work would commence on construction of the building at the end of this year with a comp
